The aid the US was providing Pakistan was immaterial compared to the money Beijing is pouring into Pakistan. Pakistan is quickly becoming a client state of China due to short-sighted economic deals that will cripple their economy for decades and have them at the will of Beijing.

It was most certainly inevitable, but you are right, there is zero reason to make the situation even more favorable to China. Definitely a ridiculous move.
