I don't understand why Trump goes on TV, goes on Twitter for months and says Russia wasn't involved in our election, then has a meeting with Putin and they both agree Russia wasn't involved in our election, then the White House staff IMMEDIATELY backpedals from that and says Trump doesn't believe Putin/the conversation didn't go down like that.
Every decision/announcement/response from the administration, on any policy/issue, is all about saying whatever it takes (outright lies are OK) in order to make it out of the current interview. There is literally zero sense of stability, or the need/desire to appear consistent. The overall argument they push does not need to be internally logical or rational. No need for intellectual coherence. It's just one lie after another. It's like when you catch someone in an indefensible position and they build lie upon lie without any regard to the fact that they're just digging deeper and deeper into a world of hurt. The only difference is that in this situation there is a solid minority of the country who marching along in lockstep. That gives Trump the fuel/confidence/security to continue.
