Obama would have been a much harder target. Trump is much more universally hated and from the same party. He can use Trump as a stepping stone to make his years in office look retroactively better. The same couldn't really be said of Obama. Trump is probably gonna retroactively make Obama as loved as Bill Clinton was post presidency and also make Bush respectable again.
