We’ve come not to believe most boxers when they set out their own timetables for hanging up their gloves. And so take with a grain of salt what Roy Jones said about his campaign to challenge for a cruiserweight world title — ideally against Marco Huck
“When I get the cruiserweight title, I’m done,” Jones said.
And if he loses?
“I’m done,” he said.
Jones had three straight losses in 2009, 2010 and 2011, getting knocked out in the first round by Danny Green, losing a dreary decision in a rematch with Bernard Hopkins, and getting knocked out in the 10th round by Denis Lebedev. Since then he’s been facing lower-tier foes, winning six fights — four of which were in Poland, Latvia and Russia, the other two coming in small shows in Atlanta and North Carolina. He is 60-8 with 43 KOs.
He is 46 years old now, nearly 11 years removed from when Antonio Tarver knocked him out to take his world titles. But he still feels fast, he says.
Huck is 30, has a record of 38-2-1 with 26 KOs. He has held a cruiserweight world title since 2009 and is 12-0-1 in his defenses. He also lost a controversial decision in a challenge of then-heavyweight titleholder Alexander Povetkin in 2012. The only other defeat was a last-round stoppage loss to then-cruiserweight titleholder Steve Cunningham back in 2007.
