Tiki Barber details rift with 'pain in the ass' Tom Coughlin

In a monologue on his CBS Sports Radio program, Barber shed some light on what made Coughlin so frustrating to work with, calling the coach a “pain in the ass” when it came to his hard-nosed antics. Barber commended Coughlin for his prowess on the field, but said the coach’s inability to connect with players off the field led to his decision to retire after the 2006 season.

“The trouble became, we would see how great of a man he was with his grandkids, with his family, with everything else. Yet when it came to us, he would treat us like we were problem children,” Barber said. “That we were the redheaded stepchild — no offense to any redheads out there — who deserved to just be beat on and whipped about and not cared about. That’s what it felt like from a personal situation.”

Barber recounted several frustrating encounters with Coughlin, most notably when he once tried to wink at the coach in the locker room.

Tiki Barber does give Tom Coughlin credit for helping him put an end to his fumbling problem.
I’m a jovial guy, I smile, I laugh, I say hello to everybody. I winked at him once in the locker room,” Barber said. “The first thing (he did) was he stopped dead in his tracks and said, ’Don’t wink at me!’ I said, ‘What?? What are talking about? Okay Coach, that’s how you’re gonna be.’”

Barber also recalled how his tenuous relationship with Coughlin began when he first sat down with the coach.

The one thing he said to me, and I remember it, it was the first meeting that I ever had with him, was, ‘I don’t care how good you are, if you’re a liability to my team, then you’re not going to play,’” Barber said. “I knew was very capable of being a top player in the National Football League. And here was this guy coming and telling me he was going to be bench me if I didn’t fix the mistakes that I was making. ‘Don’t be a liability.’ And so I set out doing it.”

Barber did commend Coughlin for making him a better player. He endured some significant and well-documented fumbling troubles during the middle portion of his career, and Barber said he was able to fix those issues largely thanks to Coughlin’s incessant coaching.

Coach Coughlin would always say, ‘Tiki, get it high and tight. Tiki get it high and tight.’ But to me, it was, ‘Okay. I’ve got it high enough,’” Barber said. “And he’d still say, ‘Tiki got to get it higher. Get it high and tight. Hold that thing high and tight.’ So a lot of people remember the images of me running down the field with literally the ball under my chin without my arm moving at all, and the reason I was doing that was because it was kind of like a, ’All right, screw you Coach. If you want it high and tight, it’s going to be high and tight.’

“But an interesting thing happened. It actually made me a better player. It made me a non-liability as a fumbler, but it also shortened by stride length and made me stronger, more compact as a runner. And because of one little nuance (and) detail that Tom Coughlin was trying to drill into my head, I became a Pro Bowler. I became on of the elite players in the National Football League because Tom Coughlin was a pain in the ass. A pain in the ass.”

Still, Barber said he became so fed up with Coughlin after the 2006 season that when he retired, he didn’t even clean out his locker. He attended one meeting, an exit interview with owner John Mara, before leaving the Giants’ facility and not returning for “a lot of years.”

I think you forgot something in your agenda

"He's a Hall of Famer and he's a great coach and he's a great man," Barber said. "My biggest testament to Tom Coughlin is he learned how to change at an old age and that's what made him the coach everybody loves and respects and reveres, even if he can't stand the way he doesn't allow you to wink at him."

Point is, if you know it ended bad, then let the man walk in peace. He shouldn't be saying anything negative at all.
It didn't end too bad when he was asked if Tom should be fired and Tiki said no.

Well if he's reflecting on his time with coach why can't you see it from another perspective? Coughlin nags. He probably is a pain in the ass. Getting fined for showing up on time :wow:

Some (Rolle, Strahan, Plax, Shockey, Tiki, Toomer) didn't take to his getting on you personality. ALL appreciate it now. Obj even asked for coach to stay after him. That's my coach brehs:mjcry:
