On December 8, 1963, while partying in a Tokyo nightclub, Rikidōzan was stabbed with a urine-soaked blade by a man named Katsuji Murata who belonged to the ninkyō dantai (Yakuza) Sumiyoshi-ikka. Reportedly, Rikidōzan threw Murata out of the club and continued to party, refusing to seek medical help.[4] Another report states that Rikidōzan did indeed see his physician shortly after the incident, and was told the wound was not serious. He died a week later of peritonitis on December 15. It is rumored by Kimura that his murder was in retaliation for when Rikidozan attacked Kimura during a wrestling match, after Kimura delivered an errant kick to Rikidōzan's groin, ignoring a pre-match arrangement and attacking Kimura for real.[5]

I didn't know this until I read OP's post. I assumed Puro was 100% legit given the entertainers they have now. I couldn't see the current crop of wrestlers being comfortable with that climate - unless of course they were just keep in the dark.

But the late 80s-early 90s guys?? That's another story. I can see them being hardened enought to keep the secrets and conduct that business.

The Yakuza pretty much own most buildings wrestling promotions use for their events so yeah, they are still involved with the biz. It ain't shocking a wrestler can have some sort of connection with them, they kinda own part of the business in a way. Hell, Honma got involved in some ticket scandal involving the Yakuza (which delayed New Japan offering him a contract) and Misawa's wife had deep connections with them as far as the late 2000s.
