It really was, but it goes under the radar because she sang and people use that to underscore or discredit her run in Hip Hop that year.

My argument is that it wasn't "Ex Factor" that that was the #1 song on the Hot 100 nor was it the one that was inescapable, it was "Doo Wop". It wasn't "When It Hurts So Bad" or "Nothing Really Matters" that was the buzz single, it was "Lost Ones". "Lost Ones" and "Doo Wop" were definitely rap songs that dominated 1998.

This was an album that everybody had. It was the first time I remember seeing anyone be on the cover of The Source and Time Magazine at the same time. And it wasn't for R&B because her Source cover had the headline/tagline "the flyest MC" and the Time Magazine cover was covering the Hip Hop nation.

her Time magazine cover came out at the top of February in 99', but nevertheless, the point still stands. she was dominating 98'.

Meanwhile Master P made us interested in Skull Duggury and Kane and Able, and had them going gold.

That Lauryn Hill shyt was big in 98 no doubt, but she wasn't running shyt in 98. She may have been the top seller, but it didn't stop nothing. HOV still broke through and if we keep it funky DMX was the king of 1998 as well as Master P, and the whloe No Limit thing.

Who dont acknowledge her?

But rightfully so the album cant be considered a "hiphop" album.

It was a fusion of genres.

98' was the year both DMX and Jay became household names, but Lauryn dominated that year.

shyt, even Jay said when Lauryn's album came out, it was the ONLY thing he listened to for a while.

Master P/No Limit was popular at that time, but Lauryn's popularity in 98' was on another level.
