Woman accused of kidnapping man on fake date where he was stabbed 19 times pleads guilty
GENEVA COUNTY, Ala (WDHN) — A woman accused of luring a man on a fake date where he was nearly stabbed to death has pled guilty on the day her trial was meant to start.
On Monday, June 24, Shalyn Diaz pled guilty to one count of attempted murder in the kidnapping and stabbing of Matthew Angelino.
Diaz’s trial was set to start on Monday; however, after she entered a guilty plea, Judge William Filmore sentenced her to ten years in prison and ordered her to pay a $1,000 fine.
After she was sentenced, Diaz’s attorneys requested a lighter sentence. Judge Filmore will hear their argument for a lesser sentence on August 14.
Diaz was arrested alongside her alleged co-conspirator, Robert Lane Hall, in January 2024.

According to the Geneva County Sheriff’s Office, Diaz lured Angelino onto a fake date in January and rode together on rural Geneva County roads with Hall hiding in the trunk of Diaz’s car.
Investigator Cory Dean says after pulling over, Diaz convinced Angelino to wear handcuffs and a blindfold while Hall exited the trunk, snuck into the backseat, and began choking Angelino with a cord and stabbing him with a knife.
Diaz opened the door, and Hall drug Angelino out of the car by the cord around his neck and stabbed him several times on the side of the road before driving away, leaving him to die, Investigator Dean told WDHN. Angelino was stabbed a total of 19 times.
Angelino was later found by a driver on Holmes Creek Road, still wearing handcuffs with the cord around his neck.
Hall pled guilty to the same charge earlier this month and was sentenced to life in prison.

Geneva County Sheriff Tony Helms said he believes Hall’s hefty sentence was due to his lengthy criminal history across at least two counties.
