I was just thinking has anyone had real success musically after being on a reality TV show or competition?

Hell even all these American Idol winners seem to be like One and Done at best and the other shows that sprung up I don't even know if there winners actually put albums out. Even the 106 freestyle champions havent done ish over the years.

Seems to me to be music career suicide especially for rappers. I mean the check probably looks nice on some of these shows but is it worth it in the long run?

Think it just appears like that, not convinced being on reality tv has any real negative effect on music careers...and most likely a net positive...in the cases of these the contest/competition type of shows, a lot of those acts likely wouldn't have careers but for the show...and like somebody else already said, for stuff like "Celebrity Rehab" or "Love and Hip Hop" or whatever most of the acts on there are there because they're already washed anyway...the reality shows are usually either part of a comeback attempt or a last ditch cash grab to get whatever check they get it...put it like this, I don't think somebody who's career is currently still thriving like Kanye would be affected he became a permanent cast member of Keeping Up with the Kardashians

They fit the mold.... Kelly Clarkson first two albums sold well, Fantasia first album sold well but I am sure American Idol raped them more then likely with whatever contract they had to sign for being on the show

Susan Boyle was on Britain's got Talent so we didnt see that here only the news reports and web clips about her but still it is what it is most of these people sale well the first album and fall off from those shows.

Rappers joining reality shows so far seems to pretty much be a wrap for there careers after musically.

Yeah most of them on those contestant shows wouldnt but some of them I feel would have much stronger careers if they came up the traditional way targeting there real core audience instead of being on shows broadcast to millions doing songs that there not going to do for millions of people who aren't going to support them a year or two later. But I'm not even mad at those people they regular people just trying to get on.

But these rappers that already have careers should stay away from these shows unless there broke and starving.

With Kanye I think it depends on whats shot especially for him being on that show anything questionable funny or embarrassing would be all over every blog magazine ect and I dont see him handling that well. If I was him I would stay away from that shyt like Fabolous.

Yea like already been stated most people that go on those shows careers were dying anyways. Think about how much more attention lil scrappy and stevie j have gotten now because of love&hiphop. As for American Idol some of them have had success but you gotta realise its hard as hell to have a prolonged career, a=there aint too many Beyonces and Jayzs musically. Most only have a small window of opportunity and it closes so whether they got their chance with reality tv or not they would still probably not have had a high chance at a long carer anyways. I can definately see so many people popular now fizzle within 5 years (Rihanna, Katy Perry, Flo Rida, etc)

I never heard of a STevie J until VH1 .. or a K michelle or a josheline or karlie redd ........

and scrappy ...... His whole lane collapsed ...

Stevie J is a really a producer/writer so he's good either way cause hes basically behind the scene but I cant imagine to many females that are on wanting to work with him after this show, and that band him and Benzino have is going NO WHERE them dudes like 50......

The other 3 are basically trying to be up and coming artist. K Michelle had a deal and even did some work with R Kelly but she had label issues. So for them yeah it gets there name out there but lets see if it translates to anything. It sure as hell didnt for Olivia. She put out like one single since shes been on TV and that came and went.
