Downey Set For "Spider-Man," Third "Holmes"
By Garth Franklin Thursday April 21st 2016 11:12AM
Robert Downey Jr. is not only set to be a part of Sony's upcoming "Spider-Man: Homecoming" film, he may shoot a third film in the "Sherlock Holmes" franchise later this year.
THR reports that Downey has closed a deal to join the cast of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" for Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. Tom Holland will star as Peter Parker in the film which will continue a key relationship thread between Spidey and Iron Man that begins in next month's "Captain America: Civil War".
Production on the new "Spider-Man" is slated to begin in June. It's unclear if Downey's deal is just for 'Homecoming' or includes subsequent installments of the franchise.
In regards to 'Holmes,' at last report "Iron Man 3" co-writer Drew Pearce was working on a screenplay and speaking with Shortlist this week, Downey Jr. says it's moving forward right now:
"We're talking about it right now. NOW. I can't wait… I know Guy Ritchie loves me as much as I love him – and he damn well should. When we're making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. We'll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I'm tired all the time, but I'm excited about it."
Ritchie's last released film was last year's "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." and he's already and done most of the post-production on his next film "Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur." He has yet to set a project after that so another 'Holmes' may well be it.
