Dudes used to add these qualifiers to Zion and early star Giannis performances that “they’d get figured out” or “just operating around the rim limits their teams performance”. People rarely praised them for excelling at their spots

Seeing this horrid adjustment as a cog/non shooting threat from Russ the last two years or Ben Simmons as a 4/offball player goes to show that being an elite threat around the rim ain’t as easy at it seemed, even with otherworldly athleticism

Yup finishing around the rim is actually an elite skill when considering the energy spent getting ahead of the initial defender, jumping into or around a second defender, and absorbing any contact mid air with enough balance and dexterity to still finish with a soft shooting touch.

The guys who are elite and ambidextrous with it like Zion and Kyrie undoubtedly spend countless hours practicing those shots around the rim.

You could even look at Zubac, who has become noticeably more poised and skilled around the basketball this year. He definitely put in the hours.

Think there’s way too many hands in the dish for that to happen, but he should get MIP if he can play ~72 games at that level
