The groundbreaking documentary Raizal: The Jamaican-San Andrés Connection continues to garner international acclaim, collecting prestigious awards while illuminating a rarely explored chapter of Afro-Caribbean history.

The film documents the cultural ties between Jamaica and the Raizal people of San Andrés, Colombia, showcasing a shared heritage that has remained largely unknown to global audiences.

Fresh from its triumph at the Films That Move Festival in Jamaica, where it received the Cultural Resonance Award, Raizal has emerged as a powerful voice in cultural documentary film-making.
The documentary’s intimate portrayal of shared traditions, language, and historical bonds has resonated deeply with audiences and critics alike.

“The recognition from Films That Move Festival validates our mission to preserve and celebrate these vital cultural connections,” says Jamar Cleary, director of Raizal. “Through the voices of the Raizal community we’re not just telling a story, we’re documenting living history that bridges nations and generations.”

The documentary’s impact extends beyond cultural preservation, as evidenced by its Human Rights Award at Mexico’s Love, Peace & Freedom Film Festival. This recognition underscores the film’s crucial role in advocating cultural identity and human rights awareness.

Building on this momentum, Raizal has secured selections at several prestigious international film festivals, including 21 Islands International Short Film Festival (New York City), International Black & Diversity Film Festival, Kuala Lumpur International Film Awards (Malaysia), and Nollywood Film Festival (Nigeria)

Through compelling interviews with Raizal community members, historians, and cultural practitioners, the documentary weaves a narrative that spans generations and borders. The film’s innovative approach to storytelling has earned praise for its sensitive portrayal of cultural preservation and identity.
“These festival selections represent more than just screenings; they’re opportunities to share the Raizal story with diverse global audiences,” added Cleary,”Each showing helps strengthen the connections between Caribbean communities and fosters greater understanding of our shared history.”
The documentary’s upcoming screening at Nollywood International Film Festival marks its significant entry into the African film circuit, expanding its reach to audiences eager to explore the complex tapestry of Afro-Caribbean cultural connections.
