Racism in Brazil or o racismo no Brasil.

However you want to say it, it’s a huge problem in Brazil and I’ve seen it first-hand. So when I see Brazilians speak about racism in America, I hold back laughter because in my opinion:

Racism in Brazil is worse than racism in America.

I’m saying it and I don’t care who disagrees with me. A big reason racism in America isn’t as bad as Brazil is because of economic development.

For many Black Americans, there are realistic opportunities to reach a middle-class lifestyle despite where you start. There are thousands of Black Americans traveling to Brazil each year for vacation. How many Black Brazilians have you met visiting America on vacation?

Probably not many. I’ve met my fair share of White Brazilians though.

So, I’m tired of Brazilians denying racism in Brazil.

While staying in a hostel in São Paulo one year, a White Brazilian woman tried to convince me Brazil didn’t have a racism problem like America.

She said that because she can call Black Brazilian men “negão”, it shows how connected and equal all Brazilians are. The democracia racial is proven because white women can call Afro-Brazilian men “big black man.”

Sure, that is true equality.

Let’s look at some of these statistics of equality shall we.

Quick Stats
police-violence-in-brazil.jpg

  • Among college graduates, White Brazilians outearn black Brazilians by 47%.
  • Homicides rate have dropped for white Brazilians by 24% in the last decade. In the black population, the rate has increased by 40 percent.
  • Afro-Brazilians account for over 50% of favela residents in Rio de Janeiro.
  • Anybody remember seeing any black faces in the stands during the 2014 World Cup?
  • Despite being over 50% of Brazil’s population, Brazilians of African descent only account for 16% of the top richest 1%.
  • Black Brazilians aged 12-18 years old are 3x as likely to be murdered as White Brazilians in the same age range.
They are also more likely to be victims of police killings; a study by the University of São Carlos showed that 58 percent of all people killed in the state of São Paulo by the military police were black. They make up 62 percent of all people incarcerated nationwide.

“When you see a police patrol car, your heart freezes,” Luiz Roberto Lima, a black photographer from Rio de Janeiro who lived on the streets as a teenager, told me. “They could kill you because you were at the street or because you were standing up for your rights, and they could also kill you for pleasure. Even if you don’t have a criminal record, they may trump up something against you.”(Source)

Black Brazilians are being murdered intentionally.

People like to call racism in Brazil covert, unlike America’s overt racism. But these statistics are pretty blatant to me.

On Dia da Consciência Negra, a day when Black Brazilians bring awareness to Black issues in Brazil, my Brown Brazilian friend on Facebook wrote a comment about why we don’t need a day for Black awareness.

She basically typed, “everyone is equal, we need a human awareness day”

These stories prove otherwise.

I wouldn't argue that it's better or worse... But pretty different. Though my experience of racism in Brazil was as a kid, so I can't weigh in on a bigger, social scale.:patrice:
But yes, sometimes I feel like non-black Brazilians are more racist than American cacs - in a different way, though.
Although I believe white c*ntservative Americans are the worst devils in the world. I don't know, I hate both equally.

I've always called bluff on Brazils reputation as a supposed paradise of racial equality.

I mean, the cism was obvious from the foundation of this rotten country.

Slavery which lasted until 1888..only 12 years before 1900. And apparently the darkest black slaves were freed the last.
After said abolition of slavery, the racist elite promoted mass european immigration in order to scale the racial population balance in favour of cacs. Because Brazil was clearly a black country by numbers alone. They also implemented an official policy of race-mixing for the clear purpose of diluting the genetic presence of black people through mixed marriages. The half-breeds would get whiter, and the black folks would be gradually replaced by halfbreeds. Half breeds were a buffer race and half-breed women would be used as sexual side pieces. The sociologist Gilberto Freyre, a white brazilian, was quoted by saying this accurate proverb about the places and usefulness of the various races of women in brazil ''White women for marriage, mulatta women for sex, and black women for domestic work'' Google that.

So the passive agressive avoidance of cac brazilians, they can take it and put it deep in their bundas.

Half-breeds should never be trusted. Black people can absorb them when they are few, and the assimilation into black people would be peaceful. But under a white supremacist regime, and in huge numbers, deliberately created by the lust of white men and used as a buffer against blacks. And they know they will accepted as the cream of the crop in the black community. Whites reluctantly accept them or ignore them at all. And when shyt gets real, they will side with the cacs. They are black when its convienent, white when its convenient. Never trust these hybrids.

Are you brazilian?
Agree 100%, these mixed people will try to impress their white masters by going harder on blacks than anyone else. I know a few of them are pro black but most of them must be treated as cacs.

No, Im not brazilian, but I find the history and culture of the African diaspora in Brazil interesting, and Im currently learning portuguese. Brazil, like the rest of Latin America, has lot of its culture from black folks. I mean, tango, samba, bachata, platano, etc...its a shame afro-latinos and afro-brazilians are ashamed of their heritage and race. I consider the cacs there, los blancos/brancos to be the worst culture vultures ever.

I feel you, i'd not say most people are ashamed though, but blacks are programmed since kids to admire white "culture". And since there never was no civil rights movement it might be difficult for african assimilation. The most famous book for kids "Sitio Do Pica Pau Amarelo" was written by a racist called Monteiro Lobato, yet they use this book in a lot of schools out here.

That puts something in perspective now that I think about it. For example, boycotting and censoring racism or work created by racists in Brazil just isn't plausible (in a broad sense.) Brazil lacks political correctness at all levels and your voice as a black person is silenced by the people who say the most absurd shyt and then tell you to shut up and 'take a joke.' Cac americans are closet racists, but they know what they can and can't say in public.

You can't measure racism, either it exists or it doesn't, so yeah you're right. The way it's carried out here it's different than they how they do it in the U.S.

You can't measure racism? :patrice: I hear a lot of "How racist is [insert country]?"

Or white people saying [insert nationality] are just as racist as us :mjpls:

So now every country that has racism is the same ...there's no levels to this ish? :sas2:
