Brooklyn hip-hop fund-raiser for gang boss cancelled - m.NYPOST.com
Won’t anybody help this poor gangsta?A group of Brooklyn street thugs secretly planned to host a benefit this weekend to support the city’s top Bloods gang kingpin awaiting trial for murder, but the plug got pulled after word leaked out.Called “We Run NY,” tomorrow’s event was set to feature a lineup of hip-hoppers at a Gowanus nightclub — with some people led to believe it was to benefit “young, underprivileged rappers,’’ said one source familiar with the kingpin’s legal case. But the event was really designed to raise funds for the reputed leader of New York City’s Bloods gang, Ronald “Ra Diggs” Herron, supporters told The Post.Herron is facing a slew of federal charges, including murder, conspiracy and drug dealing — and potentially the death penalty for the raps.Supporters planned to rally at the SRB Brooklyn club at 177 Second Ave. on his behalf, peddling tickets for $40 a pop.The event promised to be a gangland extravaganza, featuring rappers such as Papoose, Byrd Gang Shoota and Uncle Murda, who put out a rap song with Herron that is the apparent namesake of the event, called “We Run NY.”According to a promotional flier, the Brooklyn thugathon was to be hosted by DJ Kay Slay and include an appearance by the “Ladies of Straight Stuntin Magazine,” which is one of New York’s biggest “booty” magazines. But yesterday, as word got out that the benefit was for Herron, a club rep told The Post, “Due to unforeseen circumstances, SRB has had to cancel the event, and we are sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.’’It’s not clear how the money would have been spent, since Herron has three court-appointed lawyers paid for by taxpayers. Promoters of the event could not be reached for comment.Herron — a member of the “Murderous Mad Dog” faction of the Bloods — has been charged in three killings of alleged drug-trade competitors.Since being busted in 2010 by the feds, he has been investigated for trying to escape, threatening witnesses and having sex with a female guard. He is also a bit of a “Teflon Don,” since he beat a state murder rap in 2001 after two witnesses refused to testify.“Ronald Herron and his gang terrorized a Brooklyn community for more than a decade, and he temporarily got away with murder by threatening and intimidating witnesses only to return to the streets of Brooklyn to kill and kill again,” Brooklyn US Attorney Loretta Lynch had said.In addition to being a street thug, Herron is also an aspiring rapper.Under the name “Ra Diggs” he has put out a song called “Unstoppable,” in which he raps, “I’m insurmountable, I’m the indomitable, astronomical, the abominable . . .”In his song with “We Run NY” with Uncle Murda, the duo send a ominous message to rap star 50 Cent in which they say “Some one tell Fitty we run New York.”mmaddux@nypost.com
