10:46 AM PT -- We've just learned Avery had recently undergone open heart surgery and died from complications from the operation.

News of the 65-year-old's death was broken by fellow actor Alfonso Ribeiro, who played Avery's son, Carlton Banks, in the classic 1990s comedy series.

He wrote on his Facebook page: "The world has lost a truly special man. I am very saddened to say that James Avery has passed.

"Even though he played my father on TV, he was a wonderful father figure to me in life. He will be deeply missed."

Such a versatile brother. People tend to forget dude was in everything and stayed busy after the show. We need to really show support for this brother's work and how he portrayed a positive and powerful patriarch on television, which does not advocate this role for black actors. Much respect to this man
