George Gaynes, a character actor whose six-decade career included Tootsie, all seven Police Academy films and more than 85 episodes of Punky Brewster, died Monday in North Bend, WA. He was 98.

Born on May 16, 1917, in Helsinki, Gaynes got his start in the mid-1950s, guesting on TV series including from The Defenders and Cheyenne. He continued to work through the ’60s and ’70s on such small-screen classics as Alfred Hitchcock Presents, Bonanza, Mission: Impossible, Hawaii Five-O, Columbo and The Six Million Dollar Man. Gaynes also did some film work during but was focused on TV.

During the late-’70s heyday of the network miniseries, he appeared in Rich Man, Poor Man: Book II, Washington: Behind Closed Doors and Scruples. By the early ’80s, he began to score more films roles, including two that would solidify his career. In the 1982 Best Picture Oscar winner Tootsie, he played a soap opera star with a crush on his new co-star “Dorothy Michaels” — who actually Michael Dorsey, played by Dustin Hoffman in drag. Two years later, he co-starred as Commandant Lassard in Police Academy, a role he would reprise in a half-dozen sequels and a short-lived 1998 TV series.

Also in 1984, Gaynes was cast in the sitcom Punky Brewster, playing the foster dad of the title character (Soliel Moon Frye) for the NBC show’s three-year run. He went on to recur on NBC’s The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd from 1989-91 and CBS’ Hearts Afire in 1992-93 and did an arc on Chicago Hope in 1996. He also appeared in the 1990s features The Fantastic Four and Wag the Dog.

That sucks. I have some fond memories of his tv personalities.

Quote from Lieutenant harris - unrelated

(On being remembered as Captain Thaddeus Harris in the Police Academy movies) So much for ten years of education, years of training in Shakespeare... being remembered for a dog peeing in your eye!

(On his role in The Closer (2005)) This is best job I've ever had. I think a lot of it has to do with this time in my life, you know. I've gotten older. I've squandered all the other money I've made. So it's nice at this point in my life to have a part like this, that's so well-written. And I love the cast. It's a joyful place to work, it really is. We have our moments, 'cause we're like a family. But overall, it's a great gig to have. And I love the character. I mean, there are other things I've done that I've really liked, but I think a lot of it has to do-it always has to do-with the character. It always has to do with the writing. You want to make a lot of money, but if the writing is bad, it doesn't matter, you know?
