My apartment was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy, had a little over a foot of water in my apartment. Now while the repairs to the apartment were handled by my landlord but I lost most of my furniture and some personal possessions. I've since purchased new furniture and moved back into my apartment but my questions is can I get any tax breaks or deductions for my storm related losses ?I've kept receipts of the new furniture I've had the purchase and moving expenses. I also didn't have renters insurance because insurance is a form of gambling.

You're leaving money on the table.

I already got my check form FEMA for being displaced and that's it, basically two months rent. I was approved for the SBA loan. The only way I would have gotten more money from a FEMA grant is if I got turned down for the SBA loan but I have excellent credit and no debt so I was approved thus I'm not eligible for anymore FEMA grants anymore.
