I'm a casual fan that started watching more boxing since the MayPac fight, so there are somethings I don't understand yet. Like how are fighters allowed to fight way over the weight limit? For example, if the fight is for 154 pounds, guys come into the fight weighing 10 or more pounds over that weight.

the contracted weight is the one they have to make at the official weighin..now if they dont make that weight at the time then there's penalties for it..but once they make that weight then they can eat and rehydrate within the next 24 hours...so they come in heavier than exepected..its not unusual for a fighter fight night to be 10-20 lbs over that contracted weight...anymore than that though on a repeated basis shows that a fighter needs to move up

there are times though that the fight night weight can be controlled if there's a rehydration clause..meaning a fighter can weigh only a certain amount over the contracted weight (after weigh in) on the day of the fight

its used to be tougher..they used to do same day weigh ins but there were issues of fighters not rehydrating enough come fight night..and when that happens the risk of all sorts of physical damage becomes accelerated..and there were fighters who were flat out collapsing during fights or after them or picking up brain/neurological issues or dying because they were dehydrated taking punishment..so now they are given 24 hrs to get back to "normal" so to speak

Thanks for the explanation, but they should just have guys fight at their normal weight or enforce the contracted weight.

cutting weight is all about being optimal as they can be...if most fighters fought at their normal weight they wouldn't have careers lol..the contracted weight is usually enforced..the fighters have to make it at the official weigh in..but they dont have stay at it come fight night

ill use a fighter: tim bradley...hes operated at 140-147 for most of his career

this is a tim bradley when hes in fight condition on left..he's operated at 140 and 147 and when hes not on the right

hqdefault.jpg

timmy is a weight cutter who walks around between 175-185 at 5'5' in between fights..thats not optimal for him considering his style of fighting and physical disadvantages...hed get murdered fighting at LHW/CW fighting at that weight...so you gotta cut and to his credit he doesn't blow up in weight significantly on fight night

Brolic... Alcoholics

For the op....

Usually something along the lines of losing your belt or losing the opportunity to fight for the belt. Losing money. I've even seen where a fighter cam choose not to go on with the fight becuz the guy came in massively overweight.
