Any die hard fans or anything that could maybe help me with this?

Why did his work rate slow down so much? And why was he basically inactive from 1997-2009? I know Avatar took a few years to make and that he had a script in the mid 90's.

But from 1984-1991 he did Terminator, Aliens, the Abyss, and Terminator 2. Then from 1991-1997 he dropped True Lies and Titanic. Then he basically dropped off the radar as a director, and has been pretty much off the radar again, although I know they're dropping Avatar 2 in 2017.

Just enjoying the fruits of his labor? Burned out from dropping 6 enormous movies (many of which had 3 hour run times, or close to it) from '84-'07?

My guess is that he had some projects on deck, but some fell through (like Spider-Man). Also, if I remember, he was very patient with technology adjusting to his vision, and I think Avatar was the movie he was waiting for tech to really catch up to and... naw, I really don't know why. :hmm:

That's actually pretty close to the truth. He had the idea to do Avatar after Titanic but felt technology wasn't up to par, so he put it on the backburner. At that time he was still involved in doing Spider-Man but when that fell through, he focused on television (Dark Angel) and when that ended, as @Ebonic Plague mentions, did a lot of undersea documentaries until he started Avatar back up (in 2006!).

He's all into exploring deep sea and he did a few docs, ghost of the abyss and aliens of the deep or something. He did a lot of that after titanic then started working on Avatar.

That and truth be told, homie doesn't have to work. Titanic afforded him the ability to be extra choosy with his next project and develop what he wants when he wants to do it; making the most successful movie of all time will do that for you. And then he followed that up with the next successful movie of all time.

And as beautiful the world he created with Avatar I wish he wasn't making another 3 movies. He said he didn't want to waste the technology. Maybe he could've used it with a different film. I still got faith he will make watchable sequels, but he's just in a far different world now.

When you sit on enough money to high five God, it takes you to a different world.

He always waits for technology to get up to par to create his vision this is why he pushes the visual boundaries of cinema every time he comes out with a new film and like others said he has done documentaries and stuff like that as well

by the time Titanic came out he'd already had about 3 or 4 classics ( first 2 terminators, Aliens,True Lies) and then he drops the biggest movie ever, so by then he probably had the clout to do whatever he wanted and then come back to the big screen when he felt Avatar would be good to go ( he'd had the idea in his head for a while). Then Avatar became the biggest movie ever over his last biggest movie ever.
