So, I've read all the Don Winslow books, or all the ones set in SD or Laguna, and the trilogy, though I admit to barely skimming most of The Border. I read Power of the Dog 10 years ago, and I loved it, at the time, it basically is a soap opera, that ties Iran Contra, the Arellano Felix brothers, John Gotti, Sammy The Bull in a tragic, 80's action movie, that at times shows some real heart and brutality. I also read The Cartel 4 years ago, and some of the sections were near brilliant, but the latest book, I thought was just distasteful and kind of a disgrace.
I know his heart is in the right place, and perhaps 10 years later, the violence, the killing, the real events I follow every day, I am probably as informed as Winslow, I just don't find it entertaining, in the way he continues to present it. Very blase and near tongue in cheek, satirical, he uses real people and turns them into caricatures that collapse the weight of his subjects. Anyway, I was really disgusted reading that last book, it plays like an action movie, linking Trump and Kushner to Mexican cartels, in an absurd plot.
I can't help but think his adaptations for FX will be similar. You can say that I am frustrated at the massive amount of cartel adaptations, that I haven't done one, sure, but moreso, I hate what they have done with the work. Hollywood as turned it into a joke.
