I had a debate in my linguistics class about the origin of gendered nouns, which evolved into a debate about the way in which cultural symbology and the history of concepts in a certain culture influences the gendering of nouns. Marianne (Marianne - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia) ended up being used as an example, so I had to school people on the antecedents of that symbol (See also: Jean-Michel Moreau).
