Police: Black man found hanging from tree in Greene County [GA]

GREENSBORO, Ga. -Authorities say they found a black man hanging from a tree in Greene County, Ga. Monday morning.

A spokesperson for the Greensboro Police Department tells News Radio 106.7's Nathalie Pozo that a 43-year-old man was found hanging from the tree just after 11 a.m. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation say Roosevelt Champion III was found dead in a brushy area behind a home in the 600 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

Investigators say a witness spotted the man and called authorities. Authorities say the man does not live at the house where it happened.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Greensboro Police in the death investigation. Authorities have not yet determined the cause of death.

3-year-old black man was found dead and hanging from a tree behind a home in Greensboro, Georgia, WAGA-TV reported.

A witness called authorities after finding Roosevelt Champion III’s hanged body around 11 a.m. local time. Champion reportedly did not live at the home in question.

Investigators have not determined the cause of his death. According to WXIA-TV,Police Chief Ossie Mapp said that Champion was found hanging by “a type of plastic strap.”

Earlier this year, 54-year-old Otis Byrd was found dead and hanged in Claiborne County, Mississippi. Federal investigators said at the time that Byrd may have killed himself, an argument his family has disputed.

Update, 5:42 p.m. EST: Authorities said at a press conference late Tuesday afternoon that there was “nothing to suggest any foul play” was involved in Champion’s death, pending the results of Champion’s autopsy.

Agent Joe Wooten from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation said that Champion’s body was found with his feet touching the ground, with his knees slightly buckled. He also said that Champion was interviewed twice as part of a murder investigation last week, but was not charged. The victim in that case was identified as Carol Lewis. The cause of her death was not mentioned.
