Just came back from an advance premiere, it was good but not as good as the first, which was a bonafide classic IMO. This one isn't as clever (especially in the ways the first one broke down that university lifestyle) nor does it have a cohesive plot (almost every subplot is just a filler) but thankfully the jokes still work. There is a whole bunch of stuff in here like Snoop Dogg's Christmas album, the Packers being an A Capella group, bear traps and a song contest category called "I dated John Mayer" that all had me rolling.

So yeah, if you enjoyed the first one you'll most likely enjoy this one as well, which by the way reminds me that Elizabeth Banks actually directed this movie which is kinda impressive because although these things certainly ain't no cinematic masterpieces, there's very little that you can fault her for either.

As a HUGE fan of the first film (it may have even been in my Top 10 that year)....

....the sequel is remarkably terrible.

It is quite obviously the work of a first time director. Scenes ending abruptly, bizarre scenes were essentially nothing happens....and the music was a pretty big step down imo as well.

The intern bits with Key were BY FAR the best part of the film. THAT should've been the sequel. Revisiting the Bellas, and especially the acapella announcers grew increasingly tiresome and repetitive.

AND SO MANY MONTAGES....god damn.

I mean, the film managed to make John Michael Higgins character unfunny. The subtle offensiveness of his schtick in the first film is replaced by incredibly awkward racism in this film.

4/10

Will not see again.

It certainly isn't touching the first one but I disagree. Thinking back at it now a week later I think the movie was ridiculously empty on plot, a lot of 'going-nowhere' subplots to fill up the fact the main story is a Ghostbusters 2 style rehash of the first, but I still think the movie works well as a comedy. But like Ghostbusters there was no way they were ever going to make lightning strike twice so maybe I was just prepared for it not being on the same level.
