Nicolas Batum will remain in Portland as Trail Blazers match Timberwolves' offer | OregonLive.com
Just as the Portland Trail Blazers had said all along, Nicolas Batum is staying in Portland.
The Blazers have decided to match the Minnesota Timberwolves' four-year, $46.5 million offer to restricted free agent forward Nicolas Batum, the team announced Wednesday afternoon.
The move was expected. General manager Neil Olshey had said repeatedly that the team would match any offer it received for Batum, and it did shortly after the 6-foot-9 forward landed at Portland International Airport late Wednesday morning.
Meanwhile, Olshey said the Blazers plan to sign Ronnie Price for depth at point guard. Price, 29, is a 6-2 combo guard out of Utah Valley who has been in the league seven seasons and has career averages of 3.6 points and 1.4 assists.
Hours before the Blazers made their announcement, Batum landed at PDX and talked about the prospect of coming back to the team where he has spent his first four seasons.
"I'm very happy about it," Batum said, "so we will see what happens tomorrow with the physical, and I'm going to talk with the media Friday before I go back to France, so you will know everything Friday."
Batum didn't talk specifically about his free agency, but he said he had the impression that he would remain with the Blazers.
"I knew I was going to be back here," Batum said.
Update following Olshey's comments in Las Vegas this afternoon:
“The decision was made a long time ago,” Olshey said. “We were never not going to have Nicolas back. We did investigate certain things with Minnesota as a due diligence deal. We wanted to make sure we explored every option to improve our basketball team, but there was never a situation where there was a commensurate package offered back that was attractive enough to let Nicolas go.”
Update following Minnesota GM David Kahn's comments this afternoon:
“We are disappointed that Nicolas Batum will not be on our team and wish him the best in the future,” Kahn said. “However, we were prepared for the possibility of this outcome and will move forward with our other plans.”
