Cordero H. Sims, 26.
Prosecutors said today that Sims and two other individuals had arranged to have a woman set up a drug deal between them and Gonzalez. The woman knew both parties, prosecutors said, and ordered a pound of marijuana for Sims. Then text messages were exchanged between her and Gonzalez about the price, time and location of the drug deal, said prosecutors.
Sims and two of his friends picked up the woman in an SUV. The woman then handed a sample of the cannabis to one of Sims' friends; he looked it over before handing it to Sims in the front passenger seat, said prosecutors. That person also handed Sims a stack of money that was supposed to be $4,500, but it was only $462 in one-dollar bills. The group had wrapped the cash in plastic to try and trick the woman, said prosecutors.
After handing the money to Sims, Sims then wrapped the cash in a brown plastic bag, exited the SUV and walked over to a BMW that was occupied by Gonzalez and a 24-year-old man, said prosecutors.
Sims got inside the back of the BMW and asked the two men if he could see the entire pound of marijuana because he did not want to be ripped off. Gonzalez assured Sims the weight was correct and started to unwrap the package of marijuana. But Gonzalez wanted to make sure he was getting the full payment for the marijuana so Sims placed the money in the BMW's center console, said prosecutors.
As soon as Gonzalez reached for the money, Sims pulled out a handgun. Gonzalez and the 24-year-old man tried to grab the gun from Sims, but Sims shot Gonzalez three times in the back of the head and grabbed the marijuana, said prosecutors.
The other man then tried to wrestle the gun away from Sims and pleaded with Sims not to kill him. He eventually got out of the BMW and tried to flee.
The woman who set up the drug deal, meanwhile, had jumped out of the SUV after hearing shots and saw Sims trying to shoot the passenger, who is the father of two of her children. Sims jumped out of the BMW and ran towards the man who was trying to flee, but the woman grabbed Sims began to fight him and the man escaped without being shot, said prosecutors.
Sims then punched the woman in the face before running back to the SUV, which fled the parking lot down Western Avenue, said prosecutors.
The 24-year-old man who had escaped from the BMW called police, who found Gonzalez shot multiple times and dead in the front seat of the vehicle. After identifying one of the people who was with Sims, police were able to locate him. Police then put together a photo lineup of that person's acquaintances and witnesses identified Sims as the person who killed Gonzalez, said prosecutors.
Sims was arrested on Wednesday. The two people who were with Sims have not been charged in connection with the murder.
Sims was previously convicted of felonies in 2010, including gun charges, and was sentenced to six years in prison. He was also convicted in 2008 of aggravated assault and resisting arrest and sentenced to 39 days in Cook County Jail.
Sims was denied bail today during his bond hearing.
