both great, unique, idiosynchratic filmmakers. both straddle avante garde and mainstream pretty well. and i feel like in the same way Pacino and De Niro kind of arrived at the same time, and both are kind of linked forever, both andersons were the leading candidates for best filmmaker of their generation.

i love them both and dont really gave a favorite but i will say their catalogues are really strong. and its just interesting watching their careers progress.

I’d like the coli’s thoughts on this, and the movies they have made since

pta
Phantom thread
Licorice pizza

wes
Isle of Dogs
The French Dispatch
Asteroid City

personally i’d rank a top list of the movies

  1. royal tennenbaums
  2. There will be blood
  3. Boogie nights
  4. Rushmore
  5. Life aquatic
  6. Grand budapest hotel
Who has seen licorice pizza or the french dispach, and or is a fan of these two filmmakers?

just looked it up yeah its available for purchase

don't think netflix or em spots going have it tho.

Definite recommend a watch, maybe don't pay the full price if you not a big wes fan tho cuz his humor is odd.

And it’s not close.

Wes Anderson makes quirky but predictable movies now. He has a unique style but he’s boring at this point. He’s gonna wind up in that Woody Allen tier where everyone pretends every movie he does is amazing even though he’s peaked decades ago. And they just say he’s amazing because people just go along and agree even though they can’t point to any real reason why.

Bennett Miller has made like 3 movies in 20 years but he’s more impressive than Wes Anderson just off that.

Boogie Nights, Magnolia, Punch-Drunk Love, There Will Be Blood is a very wild consecutive run as a writer/director/producer out the gate…Hall of Fame shyt.

I haven’t seen his films since The Master - which I liked - but PTA is my guy.

I appreciate Wes’ films though.

I’ve only watched maybe three Wes Anderson films ever so I can’t really say anything regarding him.

PTA’s maturation from Boogie Nights to The Master and Phantom Thread is just :wow: though. His range is crazy.

PTA hasn’t missed yet, IMO. Inherent Vice was a tough watch the first go-around. After reading Pynchon’s novel though, the film is a wildly accurate adaptation that nails down the confusing, aimless nature of the story. It’s a jarring follow-up to The Master, but go in expecting a stoner’s version of Chinatown and you’ll likely come to appreciate it more.
