Treating them like you would your own I agree with. Loving them like your own I see as impossible and foolish. These children can be taken from you at any time as you have zero rights. Are you going to be devestated everytime a single mother take her child on to another relationship?
I think you should be invested in the child,but not overstep. Especially if the father is involved in their life. If anything you should be the hype man of their real father.
