Camille Estephan, manager of former heavyweight champion Bermane Stiverne, is very surprised that Jean Pascal - who last Saturday was stopped by WBA/IBF/WBO light heavyweight champion Sergey Kovalev - is interested in moving up to heavyweight to face Stiverne in a big all-Canadian showdown.
"This is not the first time I've hear this. I'll be honest, I am surprised to see this kind of plan from Pascal. I just thought it was the words in the air, but there seems to be something concrete. Going up to this division and the weight is a tall order," Estephan said to the Montreal Journal.
Estephan said he discussed these plans last week with Pascal's promoter, the president of InterBox Jean Bédard.
"It was very brief talks. I think we could get back together in the next few weeks to talk again. For the time being it is at an embryonic stage, but the doors are open," Estephan said.
Pascal may have gotten this idea from his trainer, Roy Jones Jr., who jumped from 175 to heavyweight to win the WBA championship from John Ruiz.
Pascal told the paper - "I will be 33 years old soon and if I want to try the adventure, it's time. Quebecers would like to attend this fight and for me it would be a great challenge. I could fight at 200-210 pounds without too much fat. And I would not be the first to move from light heavyweight to heavyweight. Evander Hollyfield was cruiserweight champion before moving to heavy. There was Archie Moore and even Roy Jones Jr. who made the jump. People will say that Jean Pascal is crazy, but I like challenges and I do not want to wait to be too old.
