I ended up watching the entire vice segment based off of your comment, and I am so confused. From the entire segment, it seems like this is a recent phenomenon from the 50s and not some ancient tradition. Furthermore, they highlight how much the lady wanted to go to law school but then follow up with that she is really happy and she has a crush on her "husband". Her best friend arranges this mess doing what I deem to be betrayl, but then she is smiling and laughing with her friend the next day. I haven't the slightest idea whether this is all some big inter-family theater or a hostage situation.




It's all over the place. I'm leaning on the side of this being societal theater, in part because even in the most primitive of human societies the kidnapping of a relative(male or female) is grounds for all out warfare; yet her own mother, and siblings were smiling as she was shoved into a van.
