The President of Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya, confirms that his company has already begun early discussions for a fight between Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (44-1-1, 31KOs) and WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (39-4, 32KOs).
Both fighters were scheduled to return in separate fights in December, and both of those bouts were canceled. Cotto made a decision to push back his return to 2015 and Canelo suffered an ankle injury which forced him to withdraw from a scheduled fight with Joshua Clottey. Both Cotto and Canelo are stars in the sport. Both fighters have egos, both want to be the A-side of the equation and working out the details, with both fighters agreeing on every point, will take time to come together, says De La Hoya.
De La Hoya revealed that Cowboys Stadium in Texas, Las Vegas and New York are possibilities for the fight. The location is one of the biggest obstacles and certainly the date. Canelo wants the fight in May, around Cinco De Mayo weekend, but Cotto might prefer the month of June around the time of the Puerto Rican Day Parade. Canelo is most popular in the West Coast and Cotto's following is much larger on the East Coast.
"Obviously they both want the fight. It's the biggest fight that can be done next year. Miguel Cotto has been looking good and Canelo is a strong and fast fighter who has not yet reached his peak. It's the fight that everyone want to see and Canelo wants to fight on May [2]. We'll see what happens. This is a complicated negotiation. We have to see where we can make it, be it at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Las Vegas, elsewhere in Texas..I want the best for the fight" De La Hoya told ESPN Deportes
