The Hazara are ethnic people of Central Asia, said to be descendants of Chingiis Khan. They have been persecuted in Afghanistan since the 1800s. The Majority Pashtuns taking all Hazara land committing mass murders rumored to have killed 60% of the Hazara population. They also face extreme persecution in Pakistan where it isn't safe to be Hazara. Hazara slaves were also prominent. They were massacred by the Taliban but also became the most stark fighters against the terrorist organization.

They are mainly Shia which causes sectarian classes with the Majority Sunni. They are of Turko Mongol stock and speak a Persian language mixed with Mongolian loan words.

On the bright side, the Hazara are quickly becoming the most educated group in Afghanistan. They also promote the education of females unlike the Pashtuns. They will be filling more and more government positions in Afghanistan.

Have the NatGeo from I'm guessing the 80's with that woman on the cover. I wonder whatever became of her.

She looked much older. Time and hardship snatched her youth. Her skin dried like leather. The geometry of her jaw softened but her defiant stare still enough to disturb the balance of beholder. She had a really hard life; even all Afghans in her age have witnessed the terrible story of twenty-three years of war, 1.5 million killed, 3.5 million refugees.
