A police officer talks to neighbors in Camden, N.J., Wednesday.

Camden, N.J., consistently ranked among the 10 most dangerous cities in the U.S., is losing its police department in an attempt to shave millions of dollars from its budget.

The city is not becoming a completely lawless land. It will be under the jurisdiction of a new, non-union division of the Camden County Police.

Camden Fraternal Order of Police President John Williamson told FOXNews.com that the move is “definitely a form of union-busting.”

Fewer than half of the 460 officers of the Camden Police Department will transfer to the new county division. Laid-off officers will be training their county “Metro Division” replacements, according to Williamson.

The state of New Jersey has been in charge of the Camden police force since 2005, at the request of then-Mayor Gwendolyn Faison, who was in conflict with the department.

Gov. Chris Christie said the transition will actually “provide a huge increase in the number of police officers on the streets” in Camden. “I’m willing to put my name on the line for this concept,” he declared during an event at Rutgers-Camden University.

But Williamson told FOXNews.com that county-level enforcement is “unproven and untested.”

Joseph Eisenhardt, police chief in nearby Barrington, said other cities in Camden County are concerned that crime-ridden Camden will drain the county’s law enforcement resources.

“It’s a disaster waiting to happen,” he said.

In 2008, Camden had 2,333 violent crimes per 100,000 people – more than five times the national average – according to a report from the Courier Post.

Budget cuts leave crime-ravaged Camden, N.J., without a police department - NY Daily News

I had some fam who lived in Camden, luckily they relocated to NYC a few years ago before my cousin went away to school but that city looks like a ghost town :sadbron:. Boarded up houses everywhere, the only businesses I saw open were fast food burger joints, gas stations and liquor stores. It's hard to imagine poverty like that can exist in America in 2012. Now it's only going to get worse there with a non union police unit making minimum wage while politicians continue to make 6 figure salaries while fukking up the country. It's so demonic :sadcam:

Non-union doesn't mean minimum wage.
I was in a non-union police department. The only difference was we didn't have to pay union dues. Pay scale was better than departments around us.

As for Camden, it is what it is. They couldn't afford to maintain their police department and transferred law enforcement duties to the county. The city is probably going to be transferring revenue to the county for police expenses. So cutting off more than 230 officers would be harder than transferring that service to the county. Yeah, sounds like union busting. But, they are also up against decreased tax revenue.

This is a terrible idea. Police officers that used to exclusively patrol Camden are now going to be allocated to other municipalities. A dangerous area like Camden needs an increase in police spending, not HALF of the municipal officers being laid off! How the fukk is that going to increase the number of police on the streets when half of them are being laid off? For all intensive purposes there are literally half as many cops who know the streets of Camden now.

For all those who are applauding this, what the fukk? :heh:

I see very little good coming from this. Good luck to anyone in Camden or it's surrounding areas.

That place is bad. Like real bad.

This will mean more police.

They did this in some parts of Broward County with BSO (Broward Sheriffs Office), so some cities don't have their own police department. The only bad thing they have a lot more cops at their disposal. Traffic stops now mean 5 cop cars instead of one. Also, if you call the cops, better believe you gonna have 4 or 5 cop cars show up which means more cops, more aggressive tactics. Its gonna get ugly in Camden, because you gonna have more officers ready to respond to a call.

Explain this further...why would eliminating over 230 cops mean more cops?

Each county probably has 40 or 50 towns and cities. Like Broward County has about 50. Not all of them are serviced by County police. So that means since Margate has their own police officers, they only have 180. Broward County Sheriffs office has 3,200 police officers for about 13 cities.

BSO goes extra hard...county police comes in heavy every time. I remember when they took over for parts of Lauderhill, you saw police cars patrolling every 15 minutes. You can't even chill without the police harassing you. Those county police are not gonna be in Camden on the humble, they have enough back up to be a nuisance.

Look up Nick Navarro, he's the reason people hate BSO. They locked up half my city.
