'The Fall Guy' Falls Shy: Weekend Box Office Results (May 3-5)

The Fall Guy is here to kick off summer at the movies. Unfortunately, he took a little tumble to the tune of a disappointing $28.5M. I don't think Universal was expecting that return on a $125 million dollar budgeted action flick. That budget is Summer Blockbuster but that opening is reserved for "I'll catch it at Blockbuster." :francis:

This opening is actually worse than Bullet Train, David Leitch's 2022 action flick that released in August and did $30M. Similar openings but that movie had 59-year old Brad Pitt and was made on a restrained, by comparison, $85.9M budget. The Fall Guy has yolked-up, 43-year old Ryan Gosling coming off of Barbie. :gucci: Maybe it'll have great legs, though. With an A- CinemaScore, word of mouth could help bring more people to the movies to see it this summer.

Maybe Universal should have tried to get Tom Cruise for the lead role. He was literally born to play this part as a stuntman. Plus, he would have had perfect chemistry with Emily Blunt since he worked with her in Edge of Tomorrow; this could have been a spiritual successor of sorts. What coulda / shoulda been. :patrice:

While The Fall Guy disappointed, Sky Guy surprised. That's right, Star Wars: Episode l - The Phantom Menace, celebrating its 25th anniversary, took 2nd place with $8M. It was Star Wars day, yesterday, so it makes sense Episode l would perform well, but to take 2nd place? :ehh: We'll see what the best prequel, Revenge of the Sith, does next year when it's inevitably re-released for its 20th anniversary.

Zendaya's Challengers couldn't beat the worst Star Wars prequel but it did enough to take third place with $7.6M. It's made just shy of $30M: $29.4M.

Sony's new horror flick, Tarot, debuted in the fourth spot with $6.5M. Jeremy Jahns gave this a "🐕💩" review and moviegoers gave it a C-. That being said, it's a better opening than Immaculate's $5.3M. That's where the positives stop - it opened worse than Imaginary ($9.9M) The First Omen ($8.3M) and Abigail's $10.2M.

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire closed out the top five with $4.5M in its 6th weekend. With a $546.8M running global total, it's overtaken Godzilla's $529M finish to become the second highest grossing film in the MonsterVerse. Kong: Skull Island's $561M is the only one in its way. Domestically, its $188M is only outdone by Godzilla's $200.6M. Can The New Empire get there?

Notables

Already the 2nd biggest entry, domestically, in the Kung Fu Panda franchise, Kung Fu Panda 4, with $520M worldwide, is inches away from overtaking KFP3's $520.1M.

Abigail is up past $20M with $22.7M after 17 days. That's 4.6% ahead of Monkey Man's $21.7M pace, Universal's other recent release. Abigail should be available on premium on-demand tomorrow.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare fell to 11th place with $1.6M. It's totaled $18.4M this far.

Dune: Part Two made another $785K. It's running total is now $281.3M.

A24's I Saw the TV Glow made $116K from 4 theaters.

Looking back at it, they should’ve dropped The Fall Guy around Valentine’s Day with the central romance sub-plot and all. Could’ve catered itself better during February rather than an early May slot typically reserved for a new MCU or franchise blockbuster entry.

Yeah, I thought Fall Guy would do better considering the amount of marketing and Gosling being hot right now. Maybe the positive word of mouth can help with legs.

Although Kingdom of the Apes coming out next week isn't going to help.

motherfukking Ep1 is in second place?

SW fans really that starved for a movie?

Nice generational bond, this was the Episode IV for Millennials and since many are parents now, it makes sense to see them take their young children to see it on the big screen.

Even the worst prequel of SW is better than any of the Rey stories...#Facts

Shame, The Fall Guy was a fun flick. Nothing mind-blowing, but a safe action comedy. Thought Universal actually did a good job of marketing it too, I guess folks for the most part just weren’t interested.
Nobody cared. I actually thought the initial trailer was pretty good but I said last week this shyt would flop. Let's see if Apes does well I'm not seeing too much hype for it right now.

Enough Monkey Business - Disney Monkeys do Big Business: Weekend Box Office Results (May 10-12)

Now that's more like it. After a disappointing start to the summer with last week's The Fall Guy only doing $27.7M, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is here to save the day with a $56.5M opening. That's just below Kung Fu Panda 4's is $57.9M opening from 2 months ago. And that sequel is sitting on $191.1M domestically. We'll see if Planet of the Apes has the legs. It only scored a B with audiences, The worst score in the franchise since the B- Tim Burton's reboot got it in 2001.

Speaking of that, prior Planet of the Apes film, how does the new ones stack up to previous franchise entries? War for the Planet of the Apes bowed to $56.2M in July of 2017. So the two latest entries are within $300K of each other's openings. That's freaky. However, adjusted for inflation WFTPOTA's $56.2M becomes $71.1M. It's obviously well shy of Dawn's $72.6M from July of 2014. It's 3% more than 2011's Rise, which did $54.8M. It's the same story with inflation though as that translates to $75.5M in today's dollars.

So, yeah on the surface, $56.5M looks like a win for Disney and the box office. This is more befitting of actually kicking off the summer seasonl. Like the last Ghostbusters film, this is very consistent with prior entries in the franchise. However, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes is toting a hefty $160M production budget so it's got some work to do recoup. Fortunately It made $72M overseas for a grand opening of $129M.

The modern Apes are such a dependable franchise. Kingdom builds up its world and sets up some crucial plot points that will hopefully pay off in the next entries, but I didn’t find to be as slow as most people portray it either. Looking forward to seeing how the rest of the trilogy shakes out.
