Vodou : Haiti evening at the 2022 biennale of Ouidah (Benin)
15/08/2022
Sunday August 14, the contemporary session of the Biennale of Ouidah 2022 put the spotlight on a Haiti evening.
The singer, Haitian dancer Erol Josué, Hougan and Director General of the National Bureau of Ethnology (BNE) revived to the public, the highlights of the night of August 14, 1791, the vodou ceremony of Bois Caïman in communion with the polyphonic choir vodou women from the Palace of King Daada Dagbo Hounon Hounan ll, (Supreme Leader of voodoo).
It is this ceremony which marked the starting point of the slave revolt which will lead to the declaration of the independence of the island of Saint-Dominique today called Haiti and the creation of the first black Republic of the world.
Emmelie Prophète, the Minister of Culture and Godmother of the Biennale, recalled at the occasion the cultural mix between Benin and Haiti. An opportunity for her to reiterate her commitment to the "Laboratorio Contemporary Arts" to perpetuate this Biennial, because for her "Benin is Haiti and Haiti is Benin".
