Old heads ...whats the best jazz era?:ohhh:

Academics historically always talk about the roaring 20's and "jazz age" in the same breath.

But the best jazz music(or rather the jazz music I like) seams to come from at least like 20 years or so down the line.

:jbhmm:
The 20's seems like that big band sound era with an accompanying over all american jazz entertainment culture... in terms of music, attire, dance, etc.

While later periods had great jazz development even though jazz wasn't necessarily the most popular music/cultural expression at the time. SEE: various levels of cultural competition from Blues, Rock n Roll, and R&B

So again, in your opinion... :jbhmm:
  • Whats the best jazz music era?
  • What era had the best compositions?
(irrespective of if the rest of the culture followed suit)

Big Band and Swing Jazz I feel. Glen Miller's band was doing the damn thing.

I'm sitting here thinking:jbhmm: I know Duke Ellington was also putting in work back then ...but I think I know what the kicker is for me with big band tunes.:patrice:
  • Big band tunes are geared more so towards dancing
  • While later forms of jazz are geared more so towards "lounging" or "chilling"
I think I prefer jazz music I can chill, lounge, and wine down to(like weed in music form):wow:

Can you recommend some of that chill lounge jazz? Preferably bass heavy?

1920s-1940s has the best american popular music jazz comps

mid to late to 1940s-1960 probably has the best straight ahead jazz comps

1970s-1980s has the best jazz sound for hiphop era/samplers
