One of entertainer Usher’s sons nearly drowned in a swimming pool, but was revived by the time paramedics arrived, Atlantapolice said Tuesday.
Eugene Stachurski, 35, of Atlanta, was working as a contractor at a northwest Atlanta home when he heard frantic screams from outside. The 5-year-old son of Usher was underwater, partially stuck in a pool drain, according to an Atlanta police report obtained by The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The incident happened shortly before 3 p.m. Monday at a pool behind a home in the 2900 block of Howell Mill Road, police said Tuesday.
Usher Raymond V, 5, was swimming in the pool when he got stuck Monday afternoon, according to police. The boy’s great-aunt and a housekeeper attempted to free the boy before calling for help from two contractors working on the sound system in the home, the report states.
As the boy’s great-aunt made a frantic call to 911, Stachurski was able to reach the boy and administer CPR until paramedics arrived, police said. Out of breath and hysterical, Rena Oden pleaded with an operator to send help fast, a 911 call obtained by The AJC.
“I couldn’t get him,” Oden said. “They got him and they’re doing CPR on him now.”
By the time paramedics arrived, little Usher was breathing, Oden told the operator. The boy was taken by ambulance to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Scottish Rite, where he was expected to remain overnight for observation, police said Monday. He was alert and breathing while being transported by ambulance, the report states.
The hospital could not confirm whether the child was still in the hospital Tuesday, citing privacy concerns.
Efforts to reach witnesses and Stachurski were unsuccessful Tuesday afternoon. Records show the home was purchased in 2010 for $3.3 million, but is not owned by a member of the Raymond family.
It was not known why the child and his father’s aunt were at the home. But one thing was clear: Stachurski most likely saved the boy’s life.
“Mr. Eugene Stachurski was successful in reviving the victim,” the report states.
Usher Raymond V is one of two sons of Usher and Tameka Foster, who are divorced.
Monday’s water scare came a little more than a year after the death of Kile Glover, the 11-year-old son of Foster. Kile died two weeks after a Lake Lanier boating accident left him critically injured.
