Say you did something illegal and got a 10 dollar fine on the same day you got a paycheck for 10,000 dollars.
Are you less likely to do the thing that you got fined for?
If you were fined 10% of that 10k on your first violation, then 15% on a subsequent violation with the fine increasing by 5% every time you commit the crime, will that change your behavior?
Am I just ignorant or is there a very good reason why Google could be fined around $2.6Billion
While its profit in one fiscal quarter was $76 billion
That's what? Less than 4% of what the company made in 3 months
For comparison, if you just got paid 1,500 and you paid a fine that represented 3.5% of that money you just made, that's 52 dollars. Are you going to avoid paying that 52 dollar fine in the future? Maybe, but will you be upset if you're fined the same amount again? Probably not. Will you be upset if the next fine was 100 dollars?
