Iran is running the show in regards to Israel. Russia won’t take part in anything involving Israel regardless if it comes from Iranian or Syrian leadership.

Israel is more of an asset to Russia than most would think. People look at them as our pawn but it’s way deeper than that.

Just read the UAV was Iranian. It will be interesting to see if Iran keeps pushing buttons.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said on Saturday that he made it clear to Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday that Israel will defend itself against any attack coming from Syria.

The Israeli military said it shot down an Iranian drone that infiltrated the country and struck the Iranian site from which it was launched. Syrian air-defense missiles hit an Israeli F-16 fighter jet, prompting the pilots to eject. Following the downing of the jet, Israel carried out what an Air Force general said was the "largest and most significant" strike in Syria since 1982.

"Our policy is clear," Netanyahu said. "Israel will defend itself against any aggression and any attempt to violate its sovereignty," Netanyahu said. "Iran undertook such attempt today. It violated our sovereignty, and infiltrated its drone into Israeli airspace from Syria."
Netanyahu said that he told Putin that Israel told Putin that it is "our right and duty to defend ourselves against attacks from Syria." Putin urged Netanyahu to avoid any steps that would lead to a new confrontation in the region, Interdax reported, citing the Kremlin.

The prime minister said he also spoke with U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson following the events in Syria. Tillerson is expected to embark this weekend on a five-nation tour of the Middle East, where he will be visiting Egypt, Turkey, Kuwait, Jordan and Lebanon.

"Israel holds Iran and its Syrian hosts responsible for today’s aggression. We will continue to do whatever is necessary to protect our sovereignty and our security," the prime minister added in a statement published in English, as well as in a video released on Twitter.

Netanyahu also said Israel seeks peace, but that it will continue to defend itself against any attack or Iranian attempt to establish itself in Syria, "or anywhere else."

Israel earlier asked the UN Security Council to condemn Iran. Israel's ambassador to the UN called on the panel to "put an end to Iranian provocations."

The Pentagon said Saturday that the United States fully supports "Israel's inherent right to defend itself against threats to its territory and its people."

Russia earlier expressed serious concerns about the latest developments in Syria and called on the sides to exercise restraint and avoid an escalation of the situation.

"We urge all sides to exercise restraint and to avoid any actions that could lead to an even greater complication of the situation," the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "It is necessary to unconditionally respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Syria and other countries in the region."

Hezbollah said that the downing of an Israeli F-16 marks the "start of a new strategic phase." The group said in a statement that "Today's developments mean the old equations have categorically ended."

Iran, meanwhile, issued its first official response to the events, with its Foreign Ministry rejecting as "ridiculous" reports that Israel had intercepted an Iranian drone launched from Syria.

Oh boy, here we go. I try to be objective about these things, and don’t know enough about the overall situation, so I will not express my initial thoughts. I would like to read more and do more research about our relationship with Israel, but the only information I can seem to find are very biased in the direction of thier opinion, either extremely anti-Semitic or blindly loyal to Israel. There has to be a neutral source, that just gives you the facts, can anybody help me with a source to look at?

i would start by looking into the creation of the nation of israel.
i know a bit about it but not enough to speak on it.
i've been wanting to look into this more and probably will soon.

Israel and Syria are still in a state of war since 1948. The Assad government and the Olmert and Netanyahu Israeli governments had American sponsored peace talks in secret about 8-10 years ago focusing on recognition and the Golan.

Basically what you have is the Israelis are freaking out that Hezbollah is a lot stronger due to the experience they've gained in the Syrian War. They also are freaking out that a lot of Iranian advisors and military personnel invited by Damascus is based west of the capital and close to the Israeli border and the occupied Golan.

Israel has assisted Syrian rebels out of the Golan and the Southwest border. The Israelis have not hid the fact they've assisted Al-Nusra aka Hayet Tahrir Al-Sham aka Al-Qaeda fighters on the southwestern front. The Israelis though basically want to keep giving Assad a black eye. I think they're ambivalent about regime change and haven't really been as involved in the Syrian war as Turkey or the Gulf States were.

As for this attack, all the SU-25 flown by Russians have electronic warfare suites that blind MANPADs, actually all the older generation MANPADs in both Syria and NATO arsenal. It doesn't block the new updated seekers that were developed and put into production the last 5 years. This means that someone (my bet is Turkey) gave the rebels the latest technology MANPADs just fresh off the factory floor that most NATO allies do yet have.

Netanyahu himself flew to Moscow last year begging Putin to stop Hezbollah obtaining the latest Russian MANPADs that are immune to Israeli counter measures, meaning if they get it then Israelis will lose allot of helicopters in any future Lebanon invasion, the Israelis aren't great at combat air patrol.and ground attack so would not be using their F-16s much in that conflict.

Last week, someone gave the equivalent technology to the rebels in Syria to shoot down a Russian plane.

This means that Hezbollah will get their new MANPADs (in reality Iran will get them and send them to Hezbollah) and Israel just weakened it's position long-term and made the upcoming Lebanon invasion more costly.

Utter stupidity.

For the last 2 years, the Russian S-400 and equivalents in Syria have been networked with Syrian Pantsir and S-200's. They have not shot down many Israel planes coming out of Lebanese airspace due to restraint. The immediate reaction and shoot-down of an Israeli plane shows that the Russians are pissed off and gave Damascus the green light.

Did Russia really give Hezbollah those type of MANPADS? I really doubt that since Russia and Israel got trade deals going on.

Not Russia. Iran buys Russian weapons that go to Hezbollah as the thinking goes.

Netanyahu has gone to Russia like 4 times in the last 18 months. He and the Israeli government is very concerned with Hezbollah getting this type of technology. Putin basically tells him the Russians won’t get involved in any existing conflict between Hezbollah/Assad and Israel but for the Israelis not to attack Russian positions in Syria.

For the Israelis this confines them to attacking areas near the Golan and West of Damascus. They attacked the T4 airbase last year and the Russians summoned the Israeli Ambassador asking “WTF are y’all doing” as T4 is hundreds of miles away and was being used for the ISIS fight.

The Syrian War has postponed any Israeli invasion of Lebanon due to these factors. If Syria ended up like Somalia and the Russians only spent their time at their naval bases or leaving Syria altogether, things would be a lot different.
