I've never heard of doing archeology work in an active war zone wearing a military uniform

not even joking - he was very eager to prove that southern lebanon is actually part of greater israel. he had IDF service experience so they thought he could handle himself out there. hezbollah probably assumed he was a commissioned officer and were within their right to kill him.
