And the Oscar may go to … 40 key movies in contention for 2016 awards

"Opening the Venice film festival has proven to be good luck for the awards race, with the last two openers, Gravity and Birdman, netting a slew of nominations and some major wins. Baltasar Kormakur’s survival thriller Everest will be keen to follow – it’s the harrowing true story of a climbing expedition on Mount Everest gone badly wrong. Jake Gyllenhaal and Jason Clarke star, alongside Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington, Keira Knightley, Emily Watson, John Hawkes, Robin Wright and Michael Kelly.

Possible major nominations: Picture, director and supporting actor nominations."

Just watched it, I'd give it about a 3/5. It's the kind of movie where if you've seen it once, you've seen everything it has to offer unless you're just really into this type of movie. Like it's all well-made and well-acted but never more than that, and for a big budget disaster movie the "spectacle" is strangely toned down (probably for realism and/or respect for the dead) to the point it feels like there's no dramatic weight (or impact for that matter) to any of the deaths. The biggest surprise the movie has to offer was the decent acting job by Sam Worthington, I really didn't think he had it in him. Not that his role is spectacular or something, I just really, really, didn't think he had it in him.
