It's that time of year brehs & brehettes.
What can be said regarding Hip Hop and black music as a whole's relationship with the Grammys that hasn't been said or written before? The fraught, often antagonistic rapport between the Hip Hop community and the National Recording of Arts & Sciences has resulted in everything from boycotts, protests, think pieces and even disses from the genre's biggest stars ("I told Jimmy Jam I use a Grammy as a doorstop", Drake infamously said last year on the chart topping J.Cole assisted 'First Person Shooter') but as the Grammys continue to monopolize their chokehold on the collective consciousnesses celebration of popular music, there continue to be questions regarding Hip Hop's placement within both the ceremony and amidst their peers. For the first time in 11 years, no rap artist has been included amongst the nominations for Album, Song, or Record of The Year; an astonishing snub for a genre that has continually been the most popular and consumed worldwide, and an insulting reversal of the "progress" that was made just 4 years ago when Childish Gambino's incendiary 'This Is America' became the first rap song to win for both Record and Song of The Year. This year, Hip Hop's representatives in the general field include controversial freshmen Ice Spice, who is up for Best New Artist and stalwarts Metro Boomin and Hit-Boy, who are both up for Producer of The Year- Non Classical. In the genre field, the Best Rap Album categories are stacked with heavyweights, including bonafide legend and 2020 winner Nas, back with the concluding chapter of his Hit-Boy produced Kings Disease series ; Drake & 21 Savage, two of the most popular artists of their generation, with their collaborative album Her Loss; underground titan and Southern rap paladin Killer Mike, with the affective and personality infused album Michael; streaming behemoth Travis Scott with the chart topping, record breaking Utopia, and super producer extraordinaire Metro Boomin, with Heroes Vs Villains. Are these artists, a grouping of elder and youthful, a representation of Hip Hop's core fundamentals and its current evolution, the biggest and brightest that rap has to offer? Are they deserving of their nominations or are they merely figureheads, curated and chosen by a committee woefully out of touch with what Hip Hop currently embodies? I'll leave that to the opinions of the posters in the comments, as for who will ultimately take home the trophy and the bragging rights, we will find out when the 66th Annual Grammy Awards airs live on February 4th, on CBS at 8pm EST.
Below are the relevant nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards. I have omitted any categories that do not include a rapper nominated. For the full list of nominations for all genres and the general field please see the link below.
