Two young sons were killed in the past three weeks, leaving behind an utterly devastated mother. Her boys were both shot and killed on the streets of Oakland.
"I have no more kids, like wow... No more kids," said Dinyal New, the mother of the two teenagers.
New has now joined a growing list of mothers who have lost their children to the epidemic of gun violence in Oakland.
"I know there's a God, but why would he give a mother so much pain to handle within 19 days?" said New
That's an impossible question to answer and unfortunately, not the first time it has been asked. In the last 19 days, both of her sons have been shot and killed only blocks from home.
"And then in broad daylight... like you have no remorse. Broad daylight?" said New.
Her youngest son, 13-year-old Lee Weathersby III, was shot on New Year's Eve while he was walking home from the Oakland Boys & Girls Club -- a group he had belonged to since he was six years old.
"He was a good kid. He didn't deserve what happened to him. None of them deserved what happened to them," said Shakia Green, the victims' cousin.
If the pain of losing a son before he is old enough to go to high school isn't enough, tragedy hit again. New's 19-year-old son, Lamar Broussard, and his childhood friend, Derryck "Lil' D" Harris, were hit multiple times this weekend when the car they were riding in was sprayed with bullets.
"I was here and I ran and I saw the car and I saw the bodies on the ground," said New.
There were a lot of Oakland police cars surrounding the bloody scene of the double murder just after 2 p.m. on Sunday. Police spent the better part of the day scouring the neighborhood for witnesses and clues.
According to police, the shots that killed Broussard and Harris were fired from another vehicle and the suspects in that car took off. They told ABC7 News the men were targeted.
On Thursday, New buried her 13-year-old and she says she's not prepared to bury another son.
"I don't even have the courage to go identify my baby... somebody else has to go because I have to remember them exactly the way they were," said New.
It's a courage no mother should have to muster.
