The latest development along these lines is the expansion of wireless connectivity from six to 36 subway stations in Manhattan's busiest transit hubs, most in Midtown.

Transit Wireless and Boingo Wireless are installing the infrastructure at a cost of more than $200 million. The major cell-phone carriers are participating. The system is supposed to be fully operational by 2017.

"It's a big deal for the millions of MTA customers who pass through these stations every single day," said Thomas Prendergast, the agency's interim executive director. "It means you can check your e-mail, surf the Web, or do just about anything you do upstairs while you're waiting for a train."

He and also touted the added safety and security the new wireless access will mean. "Help is just a 911 call away," the MTA boss said.

Back when phones were only good for talking this would have been a terrible idea. But now, they're capable of so much more.

That offline reader app is about to outlive its usefulness soon. :bryan:

so dont you gotta pay extra for this?

No, it's free! :bryan:

or I should say ... I'm sure it's part of the reason they've been increasing the fares. :mjpls:

I randomly saw the free wifi in the 14th Street 1/2/3/L station back in the winter like :wtf: :gladbron: Didn't know what they were planning at the time.

Its a pittance for how they just raised fares

You only get one free bus transfer if you take the train with a pay per ride card

And fares are up to $2.50/ride w/no freebies

AND the trains are always backed up + fukked up. Its def the world's best transit system but its still a pain in the ass

They dropped the bonus to 5%

and they've been hinting at a fare hike in 2015
and we know what they hint at, they almost always do :mjpls:

I wont stick around for the robbery. To be fair though, by 2015 I think the 7 line extension and the 2nd ave line will be up and running. Those would actually improve my commute significantly. But they are also gonna spike the RE values close by

Best? Please.

Whats better???
