In 2002 (I only know this because I located the original application letter today) my mother was in the process of applying to get a 1-4 bedroom apartment at Ocean Bay Apartments in Far Rockaway, Queens. I was in high school at the time. Neither I nor my siblings supported her decision to apply, so she never did.

I don't really regret it.

I am curious though. Around 2002, was that area extra grimey out there?

Any word?

I can look up crime stats on Google, but that may be exaggerated or underestimated. Any of y'all frequented that area around that time?

I googled the address around 2:00 a.m. and it said that it was about a 10-minute walk to the train station if I'm not mistaken. How crazy would that walk have been?

I'm not sure if that particular apartment building itself would have been crazy, but I'm thinking the walk to-and-from would have been crazy. I was 16 at the time and I definitely didn't want to move from everything I already knew in the Jackson Heights-Corona area. (If the opportunity would have presented itself when I was like 8 years old or something things probably would have been different since I would have been raised alongside the Far Rock wolves).

Anyways, I was going to be leaving at 18 to go to college anyway. It would have been nice to possibly have my own room, but I had already heard of Far Rock being a little bit too wild for my liking.

This is a true story.

The area is gentrifying, but not everywhere. I forget if ocean bay is edgemere projects or Ocean village. They keep changing the names of the developments. They are definitely trying to change things.

I dont associate with grimey :mjpls: so I'm not well versed.

Ocean Bay was part of the RAD program. Pretty much the program is suppose to help NYCHA with its Broke issues.

From what I understand the quality of life in ocean bay has improved a lot.

Post is right.
Ocean Bay has turned around through RAD. Millions of dollars in investment from HUD and FEMA and yes crime has gone done and quality of life is improving.

There is a public housing development across from it Bayside and I think that place is still a bit rough. But Ocean Bay is completely different now

The bay side apartments are ocean bay aka edgemere projects. You're thinking about ocean village on the beach side. Ocean village is now called arverne view.

They have some new construction apartments down by the water that look ridiculously nice.

But overall you're basically in the sticks, no one will want to come visit you if you live in far rock. Might as well live in Jersey at that point

It was a running joke working in Manhattan. Jersey people always laughing at Queens people for Beira New Yorkers and living farther from Manhattan then they do and all the work they gotta put in just to get to the city
