Crowd waits patiently at Broad and Wall St. BMT subway station exit for the sweater girl Francine Gottfried to arrive.
In 1968 Francine Gottfried was an employee at Chemical Bank in New York City. Every day she would arrive at the Wall Street subway stop at 1:28 in the afternoon. Being a shapely woman with a figure of 43-23-37 caused crowds of men to wait for her arrival each day. Noticing that she arrived at the same time each day rumors spread of the “Wall Street Sweater Girl” with the shapely figure.
For several weeks in 1968 “girl-watchers” would wait for her arrival to gawk at the young woman. The number of these men grew larger every day until on September 18, 1968 2,000 people awaited her arrival. The next day 5,000 came, and on the third day 10,000 people filled the streets to see the famous girl “sweater girl.” According to reports journalists from all over the world with cameras were awaiting the young girl’s arrival, people re-leased ticker tape from buildings, and police waited with bull-horns.
For two weeks in September she was the subject of intense media and mania, leading her to quit her job on Wall Street. She later faded into obscurity and became a go-go dancer.
