The 2023 NBA free agent class isn’t a particularly strong one, although it is headlined by a couple of star guards in James Harden and Kyrie Irving.

Outside of those two, teams looking for a big-name pickup this offseason will have to turn their sights on Fred VanVleet or Khris Middleton, two players who are having a rough year, or the likes of Jerami Grant and Kristaps Porzingis.

This free-agent class does boast a good amount of solid role players, though, so contenders will have their share of guys they can use their mid-level exception on to help boost championship chances.

POINT GUARDS / SHOOTING GUARDS /
SMALL FORWARDS / POWER FORWARDS / CENTERS

1
James Harden / SG / Philadelphia (Player Option)

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

An elite playmaker and still a high-level scorer, he has incorporated more midrange into his game of late. Nice post defender, despite the reputation. Health and age are concerns as far as a long-term contract but when healthy, he remains one of the best players in the league.

2022/23 stats: 21.1 ppg, 6.3 rpg, 10.9 apg, 45.0 FG%, 39.0 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $33,000,000
Career earnings: $272,039,833
Agent: Lorenzo McCloud

2
Kyrie Irving / PG / Dallas

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Occasional off-the-court issues that lead to missed time are the main reason why he isn’t much higher on this list because if we were talking purely on-court abilities, he’d rank near the top – if not at the top. One of the best scoring point guards in the league, an excellent ball-handler and good playmaker.

2022/23 stats: 27.0 ppg, 5.1 rpg, 5.3 apg, 48.7 FG%, 37.6 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $35,328,700
Career earnings: $197,857,092
Agent: Shetellia Riley Irving

3
Fred VanVleet / PG / Toronto (Player Option)

John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

One of the best point guards in basketball. Confident scorer from beyond the arc and can get to the bucket thanks to quickness and strength. Feisty defender and can run an offense at an elite level.

2022/23 stats: 19.6 ppg, 4.4 rpg, 6.5 apg, 39.6 FG%, 34.1 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $21,250,000
Career earnings: $60,782,008
Agent: Brian Jungreis

4
Khris Middleton / SF / Milwaukee (Player Option)

Mark J. Rebilas-USA TODAY Sports

Has not looked right this season due to knee problems, hugely concerning as he potentially heads into unrestricted free agency expecting a huge contract. When healthy, a championship-level sidekick with three-level scoring ability as well as underrated playmaking and defensive chops.

2022/23 stats: 12.9 ppg, 3.3 rpg, 4.0 apg, 40.5 FG%, 30.1 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $37,984,276
Career earnings: $158,332,891
Agent: Jeff Schwartz

5
Jerami Grant / PF / Portland

Allan Henry-USA TODAY Sports

Swiss Army knife player who can play – and defend – multiple positions. Much-improved scorer, particularly from three-point range. His versatility and ability to play small-ball 5 is the perfect archetype for a modern big man, but he can even play some wing if need be.

2022/23 stats: 20.7 ppg, 4.3 rpg, 2.3 apg, 48.2 FG%, 40.6 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $20,955,000
Career earnings: $60,966,660
Agent: Mike Kneisley

Check his scouting report, career accolades and more here.

6
Kristaps Porzingis / C / Washington (Player Option)

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Playing some of his best basketball since his New York days. Shooting numbers are down but he’s still a huge threat from three. Good face-up scorer for a big man and still a very solid shot-blocker, too.

2022/23 stats: 22.7 ppg, 8.6 rpg, 2.5 apg, 48.0 FG%, 36.8 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $33,833,400
Career earnings: $107,053,494
Agent: Jeff Schwartz

7
Draymond Green / PF / Golden State (Player Option)

Takashi Aoyama/Getty Images

Unique big man who creates plays at a higher level than a lot of point guards. Shooting marks improved this season, which bodes well for his future as his athleticism continues to wane. Remains one of the most impactful defenders in the league.

2022/23 stats: 8.0 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 6.8 apg, 51.0 FG%, 32.6 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $25,806,468
Career earnings: $130,914,411
Agent: Rich Paul

Check his scouting report, career accolades and more here.

8
Kyle Kuzma / PF / Washington (Player Option)

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Statistically enjoying his best season ever, though his efficiency remains just so-so. Versatile big man on offense who can shoot, face-up and score iso buckets and create plays for others.

2022/23 stats: 21.3 ppg, 7.6 rpg, 4.0 apg, 45.3 FG%, 33.2 3P%
2022/23 earnings: $13,000,000
Career earnings: $21,650,178
Agent: Austin Brown

Rockets 'Widely Expected' To Part Ways With Stephen Silas
APR 7, 2023 11:57 AM

The Houston Rockets are "widely expected by league officials" to part ways with Stephen Silas this offseason.

Silas was hired by the Rockets in 2020 when all candidates were required to meet with James Harden and Russell Westbrook. Westbrook was traded to the Washington Wizards before the season started and Harden was dealt to the Brooklyn Nets in January.

Silas was then asked to navigate a clear rebuild.

Nick Nurse, Scott Brooks and Rex Kalamian are three potential candidates to replace Silas.
