According to Chomsky, the Western push to get Ukraine to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) was a big mistake that could lead to war with Russia.
Nah, just that time when actual nuclear weapons were being launched and proliferated at a level never before or since just seems worse.open threats of nuclear war, the proliferation of conventional weapons, and rising popularity of fascists in daily life. we have a lot of people who are too casual about nuclear weapons and think only the real nazis are the ones in the history book. a hard head makes a soft ass. i hope we dont have to learn the hard way.
logically: nothing << threats << accidents << actionNah, just that time when actual nuclear weapons were being launched and proliferated at a level never before or since just seems worse.
Threats << action and nothing suggests anyone is looking to destroy the entire world right now.
Sure, but we have had worse periods of nuclear strife and war in my life than we do right now.logically: nothing << threats << accidents << action
and nobody wants to destroy the world. the problem is if a nuke does hit, for whatever reason, it starts something that probably cant be stopped. the whole point of the doomsday clock is that the conditions themselves are the majority of the reasons we reach midnight, not just people's motives. the clock goes back and forward not simply because there are fewer people making threats. it is a wholistic assessment of conditions.
people gotta stop with this hyperbole.
Also, is he still blaming NATO for Russia encroaching on Ukraine sovereignty?
he's warning over Trump, maybe he still thinks we need more open Debate with him

Can't even tell from the responses who listened to the video and who did not.
Why is no one mentioning irreversible climate change when that was a major point of the OP video?
Which part is hyperbole?
* Climate change and overall environmental destruction is reaching its breaking point, where we not only are fukking up the planet for nature but are seriously degrading human welfare and could be creating permanent changes that we won't be able to recover from on a timeline meaningful to human society as we know it
* Increased nuclear proliferation with the most dangerous, unstable leaders we've ever had in control of nuclear weapons
* Rising support for fascism and anti-democracy, not just in fringe nations but in massive population centers - Russia and China are not only totalitarian but becoming increasingly so, with India, Brazil, and the USA all trying to join their ranks.
Those are three existential crises for human history that have never hit simultaneously like they're hitting now. And unfortunately they aggravate each other - the rising fascism makes the nuclear proliferation even more dangerous, and most of the fascist parties (with the possible exception of China) are doubling down on environmental degradation.
(note - I didn't even include the insane anti-science movement, where the Trumps and Modis and Bolsonaros of the world can simply declare science and reality to be wrong and create their own "truth" even if it kills hundreds of thousands of their own people.)
Noam Chomsky did and said a lot of decent things a long time ago. He may be right partially in this case, but generally he has been an authoritarian monster when it comes to the Vai Ruzz. Therefore, he can go to hell.
