That's the same in other monotheist religions too, difference being that Christians have progressively moved away from a litteral interpretation of the Scriptures. But Islam, Christianity and Judaism are based on a "we" vs "they" dichotomy, in which "we" are Chosen, good, moral and so on, and "they" are miscreants, devilish infidels, to be ignored, converted or killed, depending on how extreme you wanna get.
