Nominated for Best Picture by the Golden Globe Awards and Critics Choice Awards, watch the new trailer for #NickelBoys now. Critics are calling #NickelBoys “The Best Movie of the Year”

Based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel by Colson Whitehead, Nickel Boys chronicles the powerful friendship between two young African American men navigating the harrowing trials of reform school together in Florida.

The Nickel Boys is a 2019 novel by American novelist Colson Whitehead. It is based on the historic Dozier School, a reform school in Florida that operated for 111 years and was revealed as highly abusive. A university investigation found numerous unmarked graves for unrecorded deaths and a history into the late 20th century of emotional and physical abuse of students.

One of the most powerful books I’ve ever read. The book haunted me for a long time.

this whole week I did a triple feature with Nickel Boys , Hard Truths , and SING SING :blessed:
Shoutout to whoever in charge of distribution because I was waiting since last year for these movies this week was meant for me.

I will say it’s an exhausting film in the best way possible when you get those little moment it washes over you like a cold relief.:whew:

school and memories associated the best word I can think of is the word “dry” from discussions of blisters , flies buzzing , blood spattering on knuckles, sweat room , and the huge fan blowing in the “punishment room”.

Fav moments (cold relief): mother telling Turner he needs to eat so his hugs can be fulfilling , Turner about submerge El into the water , children playing hide sick during Apollo 8 monologue, and lastly in all seriousness the moment when they shoot specific person and we hear him breathing but the screen shows a space aircraft being dislodged with jazz music in the background.:blessed:

Unrelated I understand this is a shallow comparison but I hope the director and cinematographer do Ralph Ellison “Invisible man” as the next project. This movie helped me visualize the book better. The boxing scenes from the fight and practice reminded me of the first chapter of the book. But I always had trouble understanding imagery in books.
