New Zealanders have the most freedom in the world, according to an international indexthat ranks 123 countries.

The report, which was released today bythe Fraser Institute, Canada's leading public policy think-tank, and Germany's Liberales Institut, examines the characteristics of freedom and how it can best be measuredand compared between different nations.

New Zealand was ranked number one for offering the highest level of freedom worldwide, followed by the Netherlands then Hong Kong.

Australia, Canada andIrelandtied for fourth spot, with the United States andDenmark tiedfor seventh.

The lowest-ranked countries were Zimbabwe, Myanmar, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and Syria.

The indexwas featured in the first publication of the Human Freedom project - Towards a Worldwide Index of Human Freedom.

The author of the book, Fred McMahon, said: "Our intention is to measure the degree towhich people are free to enjoy classic civil liberties-freedom of speech, religion, individual economic choice, and association and assembly-in each countrysurveyed."

"We also look at indicators of crime and violence, freedom of movement, legal discrimination against homosexuals, and women's freedoms," he said.

Not convinced by the study considering what Frasier Institute is : from Their mission
[Their] vision is a free and prosperous world where individuals benefit from greater choice, competitive markets, and personal responsibility.

Our mission is to measure, study, and communicate the impact of competitive markets and government interventions on the welfare of individuals.

They may claim to be "non partisan" (here) but they definitely are pro-capitalism which biases their view on what "Freedom" means.
I was surprised to see an "economic freedom" in the study and didn't understand why it was with "personal freedom" the two pillars of the study. I knew why after looking at Frasier's website.

But for those who wanna go in-depth, here is the .pdf :

how is new zealand the "freest" nation when they have essentially an underclass of outcasts (Maoris) who can't get a good job nor access to a good education
